How to get closer to God Spiritually with the Selah Method
Are you struggling to find time to spend with God? I was too. I used to have the time to get quiet before God and read my Bible and pray and actually listen for a response from Him. And then I had children. And it seemed like I had no time at all. As distance grew between Jesus and me, I had to come up with a solution to how to get closer to God spiritually. I figured out a way to draw near to God WHILE I was busy. I decided to include Him in all that I was doing and feeling.
I had been so hung up on thinking that I could only grow my relationship with God in quiet places. As if He was there in some quiet place I couldn’t find waiting for me, not standing next to me in chaos. So I decided to involve Him. I came up with The Selah Method to solve my issues of busyness, but then it became so ingrained in my life, it’s just habit now.
This doesn’t mean that having quiet time is bad. The fruit that comes when you get to a quiet place and just spend some quality time with Jesus is incredible. But sometimes, and some days- maybe most days, as wives and mommies we don’t get the luxury of quiet time. So how do we find time to spend with God? By applying the S.E.L.A.H. method.
How to get closer to God Spiritually with the Selah Method
What is the SELAH Method? And how can you use it to draw close to God?
The Selah Method helps you close the gap in your relationship with God by using daily life cues. You can find out how to get closer to God as a Christian by applying this method!
Each letter in Selah stands for an action to take to seek God first. And the more you seek God, the more you can cultivate a closeness with Him.

This isn’t something that you do occasionally and then put back on the shelf, it’s a life change. A way of renewing your mind to seek Christ first, and involve Him in all things. He is supposed to be the center of our lives, let’s work on moving Him there by learning how to Selah (pause) and seek Him.
Also, if you’re wondering, how to get closer to god after backsliding this would also work perfectly for you!
What’s a life cue?
A life cue is when something happens in our daily lives. We can use that cue to pause and seek God. For example, when we are angry, we can use that emotion as a cue to pray or recite a
A life cue can be anything you experience in life, most of my life cues come from emotions. So when I am really happy, I use that as a cue to express gratitude to God. Or when I am sad I use that as a cue to ask God for comfort.
By involving God in all that we do, we can slowly close the distance that has been created. Even if you are already close to God, this can help you draw closer.
Grow Closer to God with the Selah Method
S- Stop and Seek
The word Selah in the
Do we run to our Father and seek guidance?
Or do we harbor unforgiveness?
Or use some other worldly solution to deal with what happened?
If God is with us and knows what happened and how to fix it, why would we not seek Him first?
E- express gratitude
You may be asking, how can I get closer to God by expressing gratitude?
I’m sure you’ve heard the saying “why do we only run to God when trouble arises?”
We can solve this issue by using joy and happiness as a life cue to seek God first.
A cue to thank God.
Does that mean we need to fall at our feet and praise God and shout whenever we’re happy? If that’s how you thank Him, I’m not going to tell you not to.
However, a simple prayer or whisper of “Thank You Jesus” expresses gratitude. Recognizing that God is the creator of all things, including joy or the reason for your joy, should be enough to thank Him.
How do I thank Him?
I thank Him when I get a front row parking spot. (My husband still chuckles when I do this, but I won’t stop!)
I thank Him when my children apply what I try to teach them.
I thank Him for the beauty of His creation, in a sunset or an evening walk.
There are so many things to be grateful for.
L- Listen
We can talk all day to God, but just like talking to anyone else, it’s a conversation. A two-way street. Now you may have never heard from God. That’s ok because He left us His words in the
When we read scripture an incredible thing happens. The Holy Spirit reveals to us what God wants us to know at that moment of our lives. I have read the
We can also hear from God directly. Now I’m not going to promise you that you’ll have a full conversation with God every day. But I do know, the closer you draw to Him the more you’ll hear from Him.
A- Ask God through Prayer
This seems like it would be the easiest task of them all. Most of us have prayed to God asking for help. But sometimes it’s just hard. It’s hard to pray when we’ve been sinful. It’s hard to pray when we feel guilty or that we’ve been asking for too much.
But God created prayer for His purposes. Just like we should feel comfortable talking to our parents about all things, we should also feel comfortable talking to our Heavenly Father. It’s amazing that the God of the Universe would take the time to listen to each of our prayers.
H- Hide His word in your heart
As part of our growing relationship with Christ, knowing the word of God is essential to daily living. When we are in trouble the Holy Spirit reminds us of God’s word. But how can He remind us if we’ve never read it? Or spent time reading it?
One of my favorite verses is Isaiah 55:11:
So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to Me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
God’s word is never for “nothing”. It is so important to hide God’s words in our hearts for all areas of our lives.
How can we apply the S.E.L.A.H. Method to our lives?
